FYI - this will be a three part series because i don't want to overload you with pictures. and also because boyfriend deserves three posts all dedicated to his birthday celebrations. i'm nice like that.
boyfriend's birthday fell on a wednesday, so the sunday before i decided to surprise him with a day of wine tasting! neither of us had been and it was always something we had talked about doing since the beginning of our relationship. we both love our wine :)
the planning was pretty overwhelming. i'm a perfectionist and i need to know all the details before making a decision. so it didn't help that northern virginia has dozens of wineries. i had no idea where to go. i spent hours searching the web, checking out reviews, and consulting with friends. after about two weeks of research (yes, research. i had my notebook and was scribbling notes with my #2 pencil), i decided to sign us up for a winery bus tour. it just made the perfect sense. the bus picks guests up at multiple locations (one of them being at the metro right by our apartment - perfect!), and then it transports people between two different wineries. i was a little hesitant at first only because i didn't want there to be such a strict schedule and we would feel rushed - but it wasn't at all. we had plenty of time at each of the wineries. plus, we were able to drink as much wine as we wanted since we didn't have to drive back home :)
so once i knew what we were going to do, i was bursting at the seams to keep this hidden from boyfriend. it's so difficult for me to keep secrets. and even when i do, he ends up figuring it out! i definitely thought he would know what i had planned because the night before, while he was in the shower, i ran out to whole foods to grab some wine snacks but when i came back he was in the living room watching tv! i thought to myself - "how the **** am i going to do this!" i quickly unpacked the items and hid them in the fruit drawer - hoping that he wouldn't crave an apple or carrot sticks later in the night...which he didn't. phew.
i'm so proud to say that boyfriend didn't find out where we were going until we sat on the bus and the driver welcomed us! the day was absolutely beautiful and we are now obsessed with wine tasting. the wineries were absolutely breathtaking. i love how in just 45 minutes we can leave this city life and escape into beautiful countryside. sometimes this place isn't so bad.
so here are some pics from the first winery we visited - swedenburg. a quaint, family-owned winery that's been around since the mid-80's. their cabernet sauvignon was amazeballs. we finished an entire bottle. we're ballers.
