the hills are alive.

our day trip to salzburg was very spur of the moment. we had pretty much seen what we wanted to see of munich and felt like making a day trip to another country. we heard salzburg was very close by train (less than two hours) and decided to make it happen. we made sure to check the train schedule the night before, decided on an early departure so we would have a full day of sightseeing, and made sure to pack our purses with the essentials (bottle of water, passport, and money).

we arrived in salzburg early the next morning and had NO idea what to do first. because we only had the day we didn't know if we should do a bus tour or just wing it by foot. after looking at some brochures in the train station, the bus tours didn't really appeal to us (except the "sound of music" tour! but we just couldn't fit it in, bummer!) so we decided to venture out on foot and see where it would bring us. and boy oh boy, we did not regret our decision. sometimes having no itinerary is THE BEST way to travel!

isn't salzburg beautiful? and those views from the castle? amaze. this city has some of the most gorgeous scenery i've ever laid eyes on. i was a little nervous on the train ride that we didn't have any idea what we were going to see, eat, do, etc. but we just went with the flow and it ended up being one of the best days of travel i've ever had. this is one city that i would love to visit again.

is spontaneous traveling your kind of thing?
or do you prefer an itinerary?

next stop on my euro-trip: frankfurt, germany!

Whooohooo Frankfurt! :) What are you going to be doing there? It's a great city to live in but there isn't too much for tourists here! I was just in Salzburg in July and those pictures brought me right back! <3

Your photos are stunning and bring back memories - I visited Salzburg a few years ago. I enjoy planning trips finding out beforehand places if interest.

Ooh wow - Salzburg looks awesome! Really wanted to go this summer, but there just wasn't enough time :( Oh well, maybe next year! Agreed that sometimes spontaneous traveling leads to the best adventures :)

Sponteneity really is the way to go with day trips (unless there was just that one thing that you are dying to see). But seriously, some of these photos could be on postcards. Especially the view of the mountains. And I enjoy the older men playing life sized chess too. It's just one of those things you don't see every day.
